KSCMHE Releases New 988 Equity Policy Brief

The current emergency response system was not designed to meet the needs of those in behavioral health crisis. First responders are not equipped with training necessary to expertly intervene. Inadequate interventions occur too frequently for people in distress, and the consequences of this are increased trauma and inequity.

Embedding Equity into 988: National Scorecard Quarterly Report

Following the release of our policy brief “Embedding Equity into 988,” in June 2022, Kennedy-Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity and Beacon Health Options have partnered to continuously evaluate best practices deployed by states to ensure equity in the implementation of 988 on a quarterly basis.

First-Ever Report Demonstrating the Devastating Cost of Mental Health Inequities

The Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine (SHLI), with support from Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc., a leader in mental health, today released the executive summary for The Economic Burden of Mental Health Inequities in the United States Report. SHLI looked at a four-year period (2016-2020) and found, at minimum, nearly 117,000 lives and approximately $278 billion could have been saved. The full report will be released and available for download in the coming days.

New Initiative to Define Policy Recommendations for Embedding Equity into 988

The Kennedy-Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity (KSCMHE), an entity of the Satcher Health Leadership at Morehouse School of Medicine, announces a new initiative in partnership with Beacon Health Options (Beacon): Embedding Equity into 988: Imagining a New Normal for Crisis Response. This research and policy initiative will imagine equitable crisis response for the future of behavioral health service delivery ahead of the July 2022 launch of 988, a national crisis line that will serve as a “911” for psychiatric emergencies.
